Benefits of Online Legal Education

In our increasingly global world where important meetings are held virtually and colleagues from a variety of different time zones can collaborate with each other instantaneously, many students are choosing to attend online law programs.  Online law schools provide a variety of benefits that traditional law schools do not offer.  As more students make the choice to attend an online law school rather than a fixed facility law school, the opportunities available to such students, as well as the quality of such schools, continue to increase.

As is the case with distance education in general, although online law schools remove the classroom, they do not remove critical learning that occurs in the classroom. In fact, many of benefits associated with attending  an online law school can increase a student’s likelihood for success since students attending online programs are routinely characterized as being independent learners, highly motivated, and focused—the precise skills that are needed to succeed  both inside and outside of the classroom.

Online legal education has countless benefits, but let’s just cover a few shall we?

1.  Flexibility

Online programs are known for their flexibility.   Online law degree programs are no different.  You can earn your JD from anywhere in the US or the world for that matter because your classroom is just a click away.  Timing is flexible too.  St. Francis for example schedules all of its interactive classes in the evening, which allows students to continue working while they earn their JD; this is not the case with traditional law school where class schedules and sometime even ABA rules make it impossible for students to keep their jobs.

2.  Accessibility

Students in online JD programs can login to their classes from their home or their office.  They can attend class even when they have to stay late at the office, because there is no commute to school.  Students don’t even have to miss class when they travel because the classroom is right at their finger tips.  Also, unlike traditional law schools where material is presented in class and your notes are all you have as a record, online classes are recorded and accessible by students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the term of the class.

3.  Affordability

Online legal education is significantly less expensive than attending a traditional law school.  At a traditional law school you will pay about $40,000 A YEAR just in tuition.  At an online school, you can get your entire law degree for less than $40,000!  For instance at St. Francis, a year’s tuition is $6500, meaning the total cost for your tuition for all 4 years of school is only $26,000.  That is a savings of over $94,000!

4.  Networking

At a traditional law school you get to meet a lot of different people, some of whom may be from different states or possibly different countries, but all of them are residing in generally the same place while they attend law school.  Contrast that with the online experience where you will get to meet students currently living all over the United States and the world!  Additionally, many online students already are successful in their professions and are attending law school to quench their thirst for knowledge or develop yet another skill set; you will get to meet people from every imaginable profession, instead of those who are solely interested in the practice of law.

About onlinelawdegree

St. Francis was founded in the heart of Silicon Valley, where new start-up companies, young entrepreneurs, and the world’s leading venture capital firms have created some of the world’s most innovative companies. St. Francis began when a group of entrepreneurs began lamenting the state of legal education and the fact that: * When most law students graduate, they are not armed with the skills they actually need to practice law and instead learn how to practice law during the first three years on the job, at the expense of clients. * Clients are beginning to refuse to pay for junior associates to get trained on the job; * Legal jobs and services are quickly being shifted overseas; * There are fewer “big law” jobs available; and * Law students are taking on huge amounts of debt in the hopes of obtaining “big law” jobs. We quickly realized that there is a growing demand for a different type of legal education and our mission is to provide it. At St. Francis, we emphasize the things students need to know to practice law, thereby supplying the legal market with graduates who have already gained exposure to a wide range of skills that most law graduates do not obtain until several years on the job.
